Cocks-comb crested roof tile

Cocks-comb crested tiles such as this, cut using a knife prior to firing, would have given the roof ridge of New Place a distinct appearance at the time of Hugh Clopton and William Shakespeare.

These would have been spaced along the highest point of the tiled roof and were usually reserved for buildings of the wealthy. These are named due to their resemblance of  the crest of a domestic cock.
